Cleat Chasers
What’s good everyone?
To keep you all updated, I’ve been doing some work booking summer shows for H&TC as well as preparing for our upcoming performances. I like what we’ve got going. The release of Reflex Rhymes, a mixtape collaboration between myself and DJ Benzi, is on the way– I should have more updates on that in the next 5 or 6 days.
Anyway, I found myself with some free time (never can seem to get enough of that) and thought I’d bring a topic to the table that I’ve been thinking about.
Recently, a few friends and I were discussing the dating habits/lifestyle/ethics of a “Cleat Chaser.” For those completely oblivious to the term, I’ve turned to my good friends at Urbandictionary.com to help clarify:
Cleat Chaser- a promiscuous woman who follows athletes (baseball or football) usually on the college level, in the hopes of having intercourse with one of them
From a definition standpoint alone (granted it is urban dictionary we’re referencing), the term seems to roll off the tongue in a distasteful, almost stalker-like manner. But in most situations, there is at least some grey area to work with. As a matter of fact, there are plenty of women who are proud to be accounted for in the Cleat Chasing Nation.
One friend of mine stated that instead of just seeking sex with the cleat-bearer, the chaser is also in pursuit of status– they want to be THAT girl with THAT baseball/football/(does men’s summer league slow-pitch softball count?) player when the limelight is on. Makes sense.
My first encounter with this type of behavior came when I started college and began playing basketball. At the time we referred to them as “Jersey Chasers,” since we didn’t ball in cleats. Same concept. There was a noticeable “group” of girls (I quote “group” because even though some of them rolled together and hung out, they all had some type of self-imposed competition against one another) that always seemed to be hitting up and trying to hang with the hoopers. After sitting through a couple of locker room discussions, it became clear that these girls weren’t just after any ONE player, but literally ANY of us. And sometimes they didn’t come with a pack of chasers, just by themselves. The ones that roll solo are the hardest to detect.

Hopefully Big Man can lock down at least one of these candidates before he graduates in May-- girls don't chase retired cleats that are collecting dust on shelves.. unless those shelves are also holding up a framed Med School diploma
As my friends and I have not been able come to a concrete conclusion on how to view or point out a Cleat Chaser, I decided it was time to take it to the blogs.
So, to get the discussion rolling I’ll start by throwing out a few questions:
- What is your definition of a Cleat Chaser?
- Can men be Cleat Chasers?
- If the chaser succeeds in her quest, is she still a Cleat Chaser if the two begin dating? What if they get married?
- Is there a difference between a Cleat Chaser and a girl who is only attracted to athletes?
- Can a girl who has only dated athletes make a case for her NOT to receive Cleat Chaser status?
- Is there even anything wrong with being a Cleat Chaser?
- Will the Yankees win the 2010-2011 World Series? (That’s a gimme, of course they will)
Throw your answers/comments/thoughts about the topic in the Comments area. The first 5 people to post a decent response (AKA more than a sentence and a half) will receive an exclusive track from Reflex Rhymes before it is released. I already have the track picked out, I’ve never posted it anywhere or given it out to anyone so it’s a LEGIT exclusive!! Let the party begin

Well at one point in my life, I was a minor league ball player, and to say the least these are the worst cleat chasers of all time. We would refer to them as “The Birds” ha cause they were like condors and voltures… Swarming the plays after games, bars, etc. There are in my opinion a couple rules to follow when deciding if in fact u have meet or are dating a cleat chaser… 1. She comes to all the games yes even the South Dakota st. games 2. She has or is currently envolved with 2 or more guys on the same team 3. She consistently talks of what will happen when u make it/ sign a contract. There Also a cleat cheater: this is defined as one who cases after a player, dates them and drops like ur hot, for a player on another team lol

I, myself, have been victimized by this not-so-awful offense in the not-so-distant past. I just happened to win the intramural basketball championship at my school. While this may not seem like a big deal to many of you, this is a solid way to gain respect in the eyes of a semi-cleat chaser. A semi-cleat chaser is defined as the girl that says “I want to be with an athletic guy but I want him to be kind of smart and normal too”. A simple cleat chaser does not require the smart aspect. Back to the story, if you are wondering why a semi-cleat chaser would be at the intramural basketball game, your right they weren’t however the treadmills and track happen to be conveniently located right above the hoopin’ courts. It is never easier to reel in the semi-cleat chaser from the bar after the “I saw you playing basketball the other day” line. After this line is stated, you might as well go ahead and leave the bar no matter what time it is. I hope I can find similar gym set-ups in the post-grad world in order to take advantage of these strategically placed treadmills.

@Jay-man: I like the birds analogy, seems fitting in that scenario. First they chase you, then once they get you they do it like the fire drill: Stop, drop, and roll out to the next player. Brutal!!
@Semi-Cleat Chasee Officiando: I see you pulling them in intramural-style Mackness, no shame to the game! Thank God for strategically-placed fitness equipment

that was pretty neutral i’m proud of you, but im going to take sides:
I say the definition from urbandict describes these girls pretty well. but that group of people are sleezy in the first place and shouldn’t be taken seriously if all they are after is status. – plus what does it say about the men that accept these skanky advances? you say the girls want status well, the guys want nookie, so who can point fingers here?-
to answer the other questions you asked; i think if a girl has dated athletes her whole life, maybe because she her self is an athlete or athletic person, she shouldn’t be frowned upon for being attracted to someone with similar values that can challenge her. Are there not men that only date athletic/fit girls? do you have a derogatory term for them? some people value physical health more than others and who should judge them for that?
and yes there is something wrong with cleat chasers. also gold diggers, groupies, people that date bar tenders for free drinks, etc… there are people in the world who use others for their own personal gain; be it status, cash flow, free stuff, whatever. it’s one thing to be that person, but could it even be considered worse to be on the receiving side of this deal, knowing what is going on? it’s unfair to blanket that negativity on to all girls that date guys who happen to play sports.
